Landfill Debate Challenge

The election may be over, but the fight between the Landfill Taskforce and the Simi Valley Landfill continues to rage on. The Taskforce recently submitted a letter to the General Manager of Waste Management’s Simi Valley Landfill to debate the issue of the expansion in a public forum. The letter reads as follows:

November 4, 2010

Mike Smith
General Manager
Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center
2801 Madera Road
Simi Valley, CA 93065

Dear Mr. Smith:

The Simi Valley Landfill Expansion Taskforce invites Waste Management to participate in an open forum/debate on the issues surrounding the expansion of Simi Valley Landfill. We believe the community would benefit from an opportunity to hear all sides of the proposed expansion in a forum that ensures the debate does not become a battle of competing sound bites, half-truths and unanswered questions.

A community forum/debate with mutually agreed upon rules would prove beyond a doubt WM’s commitment to the principles outlined in your April ll, 2007 press release announcing Waste Management’s application for expansion of the Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center. You stressed that WM is “committed to meeting the long-term waste disposal and recycling needs of Ventura County in an environmentally sensitive, cost-effective and community-focused manner.”

We would like to schedule this for early to mid December and have already spoken with California Lutheran University Professor Herbert Gooch, PhD. and he has agreed to serve as the moderator. I am hopeful you will accept our invitation at which time we can finalize the remaining pertinent details.

You can contact me at your convenience at 805.231.2497.

Barbra Williamson
Councilwoman, City of Simi Valley
Chair, Simi Valley Landfill Expansion Taskforce

So far, all we know at this point is that Waste Management is in receipt of this letter. No official word yet on whether or not they will accept the challenge and participate in the debate.

  1. Waste Mgt. keeps claiming that it wants to be open with the community and share all information about the dump expansion. Why in the world wouldn’t it want to debate if its project is good for the community? If it refuses to debate, it implies to me that there is something to hide.

  2. Interesting, there could be a bit of a problem with that letter since might violate the Simi Valley City Council Code of Conduct since Barbra is claiming to write the letter as a Council member and clearly the letter is not being done by the City of Simi Valley, yet she seems to be representing herself as acting for the City.

While I think that an open discussion would be a good thing, based on prior actions and statements made by Barbra & Company, I really don’t think that anyone can trust them. The timing is also interesting as well.

Perhaps Barbra should explain her claim of 600 additional “truck trips” and why it is not an intentional attempt to deceive people since the current permitted truck trips is 822, the landfill expansion would increase it by 70 to 892 and the last average was 500. “Not Force” stated that it was because she was actually using “traffic trips” which count the vehicles each way, which doubles what most people expect. The next topic could be the statements regarding the LNG vs. the City’s CNG.

Unfortunately Barbra does not seem to care to follow what she agreed to.

  3. BTW, WM has a website with the information about the expansion, but the task force gang refuses to do the same. That implies to me that the task force has something to hide. I have personally requested that Barbra put up a web site, but she instead gave bogus reasons as to why not and then resorted to childish statements.

    http://www.keepingventuracountyclean.com/expansion.html

So, the people can see the information from WM. The task force could do the same and put up their information, but I know it is so much easier to have as little as possible in writing when you are being deceptive to make it harder for people to catch the deceptions.

By the way little critter, the dump pays big bucks for its PR people; how come you don’t have any of it? You should demand some compensation for your nonsense so next election cycle you can get a few more votes.

Fly on little loser gnat, fly on.

  5. Not Force, anyone can tell that you don’t want people to know the truth by your childish attacks and comments. Why can’t you address the issues? Perhaps it is because it would not serve your masters.

I am sure that you know why they don’t want to put up a web page, but you can’t admit it. It is funny that you admitted to how Barbra was trying to deceive people with her bogus 600 additional truck trips per day. The list of deceptions goes on and on. The challenge remains, the task force should put up a web site with all of their issues and demands for the public to see. What are they afraid of? The truth????

Why do you think that people should get paid for speaking the truth? More often people get paid for speaking lies and deceptions. I have to wonder what exactly you are getting out of all of this. Is it to make you feel like somebody?

  6. Years ago I had a gnat problem. I installed an automatic spray system and I haven’t seen a gnat in years. When you appeared I thought my system was not working properly. I called UC Davis and was informed that it is statistically possible for a gnat to become immune to the pesticide in use. His recommendation was that I should use OFF if I just have one gnat. I have done so and the gnat no longer has a place to land.

Shoo, shoo little last place gnat. You are flapping to no one but yourself.

  9. I am not sure of where the list of 5 items that the task force wants is. Perhaps it was deleted.

If you look at the list you will see that most of those issues do not involve anything that is a real issue with the expansion, but instead deal with money. The task force wanted the land annexed to the city, which would mean that the City would get additional money. What do you think that will be done with the money? More spending? More Council benefits? Do you think that there will be lower fees by the City? Why do you think that they want lower fees for Simi Residents? It does make a good campaign statement.

The task force does not want to admit that there would be reduced truck traffic on Madera and Easy St since that is a good thing. Nor do they want people to know that it would be easier to get rid of hazardous waste instead of the current system where you have to call to get an appointment, only to find that there are no appointments.

The task force attacks the LNG, but ignores the CNG much closer to people.

I don’t think that the task force really wants a debate of the real issues, but instead just wants to attack WM so that they can get money, power and control.

  10. That is interesting. It does not look like they are fooling anyone. Of course, you get some of the landfill task force gang to chime in so it is not completely one sided.

It is all a game by the landfill task force gang.

One look at the actions of Barbra & Company and only a fool would want to be annexed to Simi Valley. That could change over time, or in other words the next election, but that is 2 years away.

His characterization of Ken Sandberg as a “gnat” is childish and small-minded. Hiding behind the cover of biblical passages is a slap in the face of all spiritually minded people and is disrespectful to all who believe in God. Not Force has said nothing to indicate that he can carry on a meaningful discussion without belittling the advesary and insulting the intelligence of us all. Shame…

  17. Well written article on the dump in today’s Acorn. Houston PR Cole wants to be open with the public by putting on more of the one sided PR “dump tours” but doesn’t want to openly debate the pros and cons of the dump expansion. My way or the highway must be the way they do it in Houston, but out here open dialogue is recommended. How about the debate going on without Waste Mgt.? Any volunteers to represent Waste Mgt. in the debate?

  18. Well Barbra, if you thought about the fact that Not Force, one of your gang members, posts after I post, then it is quite clear who it is in response to. I guess you don’t want to be honest about that either.

The article was a joke. First the task force gang should put up a web site which is honest, not deceptive. Those involved with the task force should be honest and not try to deceive people with things like 600 addition truck trips (permitted at 822, expansion increase of 892, average of 500, so it is impossible to increase the permitted truck trips by 600). Then, there is the LNG fear mongering. Anyone who is knows anything about the design of such systems, including the BBQ propane tank that many people have, know that there is a designed failure point so that the tank is not at risk of rupture. Then, consider the failure to talk about the City’s CNG facility, which is much closer to people.

Why would WM want to deal with such a deceptive group of people? Read the comments by the gang, perhaps WM is listening :-).

Barbra still refuses to answer the question as to whether she will support the expansion if WM agrees to the 5 points of the task force, as it was said they did agree. Is that honest?

  21. How funny, Not Force likes to post quotes, but does not get that the quotes really apply to her. It is quite true that it does involve the reasonable versus the jerks, but she is not being reasonable, so it is clear which camp she falls into. She is also talking, but not speaking. She is also the one who is flapping and fluttering. She only has to look in the mirror. Quite sad.

Not Force is trying to be a Cyber Bully, the same as Barbra has done. Neither are willing to really discuss the issues. I am sure that Not Force is the one who was ranting at me after one of the forums. It was clear that she could not understand a word that was said, most likely because she did not like the fact that it was against her side. She admitted the deception with the 600 truck trips, but she still does not understand that such actions are dishonest and she is taking part in that.

She is also being very dishonest in her postings here. Quite clearly she does not want to allow for an open and honest discussion. All that does is to convince people that she and those she associates with are wrong.

Don’t want to discuss the problem with Barbra writing the letter as if it is coming from the City? Quite clearly a Code of Conduct violation.

Don’t want to answer whether the task force will be for the expansion now that it is said that their points have been accepted? Not very honest.

Don’t want to have a web page for all to see where they stand, but then attack the other side when they don’t want to participate in a fraud of a debate? Yes, it is clear the type of people involved.

  26. A reminder from the past:

    http://www.vcstar.com/news/2008/nov/01/donations-to-williamson-raise-questions/

As of Thursday, Williamson received about $44,000 in campaign contributions. The $8,000 in Vineyards contributions make up more than 18 percent of her overall funds.

Williamson has documented $1,000 contributions 25 times throughout the election season. At least $20,000 came from developers inside and outside of Simi Valley. Four of them come from individuals in the Saperstein family. David Saperstein is founder and CEO of Five S Capital, a Texas-based partnership that specializes in strategic investments.

“I think the contributions are an indication of who your support base is,” Sojka said.

  27. In reviewing the 2008 documents, Barbra donated $600 to her campaign, but the interesting thing is that she listed herself as “unemployed”.

Other aspects are also interesting as well, such as donors outside of Simi Valley. A company donating $1000, then the owner of that company donating $1000, the wife of the owner donating $1000 (the wife is most likely an owner in the Company as well).

She does like developers. When you consider the development of the land around the landfill, perhaps that indicates the hidden agenda she has.

  28. This is unbelievable!!! Barbra says that someone has to donate money in order to get a fair hearing!!! People should get a fair hearing regardless and if they donate money to the person, there is a conflict of interest, but she clearly does not get that.

    Mitch,
I accepted the $$ prior to the project being discussed, however, even if it were on the table, I would have accepted the $$$. It takes $$$ to run a campaign…try it some time…Just because a candidate accepts money from a developer it doesn’t mean that we will vote for their project, and the developer KNOWS that. What they are doing is making sure that they get a FAIR hearing on their project.

  30. Apparently Waste Management doesn’t trust the Judges either. It has made a legal move that resulted in the trial judge being removed from the Case; a trial judge who was elected best judge of the year in Ventura County for 2010 and who has the most experience in civil litigation of this kind. According to Waste Management, the Task Force is unfair and now the assigned trial judge is also unfair. Makes one start to wonder just who Waste Management can trust.

  31. Do you really think that WM should trust a group lead by a person who said that developers have to give campaign donations in order to get a fair hearing? How about the 600 additional truck trip statement (822 + 70 = 892, with a 500 average, 600 additional trips is impossible)? The list goes on and in my opinion it has been shown beyond any doubt that the task force is indeed unfair.

Your statements regarding the LNP facility at the Council meeting was unfair and deceptive since either you intentionally neglected to mention design requirements which prevent a complete tank failure or you were talking about things you did not know of. That makes your statements unfair, as well as deceptive. Care to talk about the City’s CNG facility?

Do you only trust the one judge that you wanted? Do you not trust other judges? Yes, it does make one to wonder just who they can trust, but it is clear, based on statements, who people should not trust.

  32. Perhaps this will add clarity to our statements regarding traffic.

Table 2.4-13 on page 2-51 of the RDEIR clearly states that the total permitted is 822 daily roundtrips (includes waste, recyclable and employees – not just “truck trips”) and the estimated peak daily trips based on the proposed project description will be 1,533 total – or a difference of 711 total vehicles daily. The actual difference is 1,010 as WM’s baseline is 523 (under the permitted allotment) but with profits coming in from LA’s trash you can bet they will ramp up to the daily permitted limit in a gnat-o-second.

Second point: Even though Wm is proposing less recyclables their Recyclable Material vehicle trips is going from 375 roundtrips for 6,250 tons of waste to 456 for 3,250 tons of waste – less recylable material more trips!

  33. Regarding LNG, I also presented to the City Council a listing of over 100 historic major LNG spills and leaks that resulted in deaths and otherwise serious injuries. The LNG facility at the landfill will present certain environmental risks, but off-site transportation of the product is also a risk factor. Our primary concern with the LNG issue is that the DEIR did not adequately address the associated risks. I suggest you not put too much emphasis on a three minute oral presentation as I know you realize that not too much can be said under those confines.

  36. Barbra said “truck trips”, not traffic trips, now you are including other vehicle trips, including vehicles which are currently going to the Easy St. location. The current number of permitted trucks is 822 and the average is less than permitted, so to use the average, rather than what is permitted, is deceptive.

Why does the task force have the 5 points that they want if in reality there is nothing that can be done to make the task force agree to it? That seems very dishonest.

The LNG statements made, even in the 3 minutes, were deceptive and you know it. You can give excuses, but it does not change what you did.

One thing I will say is that Louis is at least willing to explain some of what he is saying, rather than doing what the chair of the task force has done and just resorted to childish comments.

I noticed that you did not answer the question as to whether you only trust the one judge vs. other judges. As you should know, a judge is only removed if there is a valid reason, yet you attack the right of a person (or company) to request another judge in order to ensure a fair hearing. There was no comment on Barbra’s statement that developers had to donate money to campaigns in order to get a fair hearing either.
